The Swan & Angel is conveniently situated right on the market square in the centre of St Ives (Cambs), belonging to the Wetherspoons chain.
This venue is obviously quite new but has kept a lot of the charm and character together with the history of the market town of St Ives. The inside was bright and airy with some good looking tables, chairs and stools, with a good mixture of dining chairs, tub chairs etc.
The service was adequate but as usual nothing excessive as it is more of selecting your table and number and ordering at the bar, however the lady that served me was charming and well mannered and generally interested in having a conversation. The breakfast once ordered did come pretty quickly, having not really had much time to enjoy some coffee.
The menu I believe is pretty standard in all of the Wetherspoons chain, the only thing that apparently changes is the prices, which can vary from venue to venue.
On the Plate:
The breakfast duly arrived and came on a nice hot plate, although it must be a visual thing, as the plate looked far to big for the breakfast, but at least there was plenty of room without spilling any of the tomato sauce. The bacon was passable although not that well cooked, and the sausage was rather anaemic looking but the taste was passable. The rest of the breakfast was good with 2 hash browns, a nice fried egg, grilled tomato and a slice of white toast (no option given). I was slightly disappointed with the Lurpack carton, as I prefer proper butter and the contents were practically liquified, so care had to be taken not to spill the contents down the front of my trousers.
I had to order my coffee at the counter when I had selected my table number, and then took the coffee away with me to the table, I was asked if I would like filter coffee or a coffee from their machine, and chose the latter, so received an black Americano … which I have to say was very good. I would have also been able to have a free refill, which is always a bonus.
I was charged £5.09 for my ‘traditional breakfast’ with a black americano, which I have to say was very good value for money, bearing in mind that the coffee was quite a surprise to me … good.
I’m sure that I will be going back into another Wetherspoons in the near future, mainly to see how the breakfast, quality and quantities compares from one venue to another. I have no doubt that in my own mind it will be pretty standard fare across the board, but watch this post for another instalment in the Wetherspoon saga.
